Our Story
A heartbreaking 1 in 4 Americans are skipping meals or relying on food donations. At the same time and equally troubling is the fact that Americans throw away 40% of our food supply—perfectly good food that could wipe out hunger in the U.S. three times over if it was rescued and delivered to those in need. When White Pony Express (WPE) was founded by Dr. Carol Weyland Conner in 2013, she knew that in a county with tremendous abundance, thousands of people were still going hungry, while many more were suffering from inadequate, unhealthy diets. At the same time, grocers, retailers, and restaurants were sending tons of high-quality, fresh food to landfills due to excess inventory, appearance, or artificially created "sell by" dates. The problem was not scarcity, but distribution.
WPE was born to solve this problem. In just nine years, WPE has grown to become one of the largest food and goods rescue programs in Northern California.
Our Model
WPE exists as a response to relieve the suffering caused by food insecurity and because our society has fallen short in providing basic needs for everyone equally. Food and goods rescue organizations represent a new paradigm of sustainable community service. WPE bridges abundance and need by diverting wholesome food and other goods from landfills and delivering this bounty to underserved communities, leading to improved health outcomes and opportunities. Another result of WPE’s work is the reduction of excess food and goods in landfills, preventing tons of methane gas and improving our air quality.
