Starting as an unfunded, grassroots effort by local residents, White Pony Express has developed into one of California's largest Food Rescue programs.
We have delivered over 20.5 million pounds of nutritious, fresh food that would otherwise have gone to waste. That's the equivalent of 17 million meals for our community.

Fresh Food for All!
WPE’s mission is to help end hunger and poverty in Contra Costa County by delivering the abundance all around us to those in need – with love. Operating 7 days a week, 364 days per year, our Food Rescue Program rescues an average of 15,000+ pounds of high-quality, largely perishable, surplus fresh food every day from local grocers, retailers, and farmers markets, restaurants, and wholesalers. It is then sorted and delivered by our team of volunteers and staff in refrigerated vehicles the same day to dozens of organizations serving those in need.
Food Rescue for Free!

New Program!
Food Rescue Hero Initiative: The White Pony Express Food Rescue App
Through this new program, we are initiating an entirely new collection and distribution system for smaller, more frequent donations that we have historically been unable to pick up due to our capacity limitations. Food donors can signal when they have excess food by using the White Pony Express Food Rescue App (think Uber for food rescue). A "food runner" volunteer will pick up and deliver it directly to a matching food recipient organization.
